Sue Hunter, Managing Director at TPHC, reflects on 2024. Watch Sue’s video below or save for later and keep reading to learn more about our transformation and improvement delivery for the health and care system in 2024.
2024 has been another year full of change for the NHS and social care, for the government, and for our organisation.
Despite the challenges, 2024 has also presented us with opportunities to innovate and build resilience. We remain on call to support our customers and partners in 2025, one transformative step at a time.
This year saw a change in Government and the new Health Secretary commissioned a review into the NHS in England, led by Lord Darzi. The Health Secretary also called for three strategic shifts for the NHS, and a new 10-year plan for health and care is due to be launched in 2025. This plan will mark a new chapter for the NHS, and a continuation of the great work already happening within, and led by, the NHS.
Here at TPHC, we also published our first-ever Annual Impact Report, a roundup of our transformation and improvement impact over the 2023/24 financial year. We’ll release these annually as a record of our results for organisations and communities, and it’s supplemented by our Insight newsletter, a way for you to stay up to date every quarter – take a look at both of these if you haven’t already. We are extremely proud of the work our team does.
Our Consultancy team has continued to support a range of clients. Continuing to advise and partner with Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to take forward their strategic plans, and bespoke projects with a number of Primary Care Networks (PCNs) and trusts. To name just a few, we delivered 13 After Action Review (AAR) conductor training sessions for NHS trusts, with over 190 new conductors trained both at TPHC and across organisations, including Tavistock and Portman, East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust, Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust, and the Royal Free London.
We’ve continued to partner with CapitalMidwife, and Sport England, so we can scale up great work and learning in maternity care and talking therapies. Our Digital and Analytics team have also provided crucial business analyst support to the Federated Data Platform team at NHS England, developing executive board insights and releasing a new iteration of the national CYP dashboard. They’ve also been supporting North West London ICB and Hounslow local authority with the roll-out of the Data Security and Protection Toolkit and the Digital Social Care Record.
Our Digital Productivity team has continued to lead the way on innovation and automation for the NHS, with great results and use cases for customers, including saving valuable time and speeding up recruitment, helping to onboard new starters faster – at a time when the workforce needs bolstering with efficiency and fully staffed teams. In 2025, we will be sharing more from our innovative work and new approach to automation for the public sector. Reach out to us if you’d like to have a conversation about the team’s extensive digital productivity portfolio.
In 2024, our Partnerships teams led a number of programmes advocating for prevention and stronger community care, including Fast-Track Cities London, Thrive LDN, Good Thinking and London regional programmes for Homeless Health, Personalised Care and Mental Health Transformation.
Revisiting 2024 by month
Keep reading for more highlights of what we delivered in 2024.
January
Thrive LDN led London’s third Great Mental Health Day. Londoners across the city were encouraged to get involved by exploring the Great Mental Health Day interactive map, joining online events, and using the hashtag #GreatMentalHealth to share their own stories, experiences and plans for the day across social media.
The short film ‘Connections’ was also launched capturing Londoners writing messages of hope.
February
To mark Children’s Mental Health Week, we shared this blog with examples of projects and resources from our Pan London mental health programmes, including Thrive LDN and Good Thinking. supporting children and young people.
The blog highlighted some important facts such as “In England in 2023, about 1 in 5 children and young people aged 8 to 25 years had a probable mental disorder”.
March
To mark International Women’s Day (IWD), we shared a blog gathering some of our projects and work to improve, progress and reshape health and care services for women and girls.
Internally, members of our team also organised an IWD panel discussion featuring women leaders at TPHC and our host organisation, Royal Free London, as well as a fundraising raffle for the Royal Free’s Charity.
April
Our engagement specialists continued to support NHS England on a consultation on the future location of very specialist cancer treatment services for children living in south London and much of south east England.
Following a 12-week public consultation in late 2023, the results were collated and NHS England leaders considered feedback from the public consultation as well as other evidence to decide on the best outcome. Following the decision-making meeting in March, the team released a ‘You said, we did’ report in April which provided the detail for how the feedback from the consultation was used to help form the decision.
May
Our Digital Productivity team and North London Partners Shared Services (NLPSS) celebrated a collaborative milestone, with NLPSS’ new starter e-joining forms processing 100,000+ cases.
This work is a great example of how automation can make business processes quicker, and for the recruitment team, this meant a reduction in form submissions for new starters from 11 to just 3 days.
Employment check completion also reduced, from 32 to just 13 days, and this work contributed to a 12-day reduction in time to hire – from 30 days to 18.
June
It was a pleasure to connect health and care professionals from across the country at NHS ConfedExpo. Exhibiting with our Royal Free London colleagues, NLPSS, we were able to share more about how we work through our Consulting and Partnerships team. The event was a great opportunity to hear and learn valuable insights from healthcare leaders.
Check out our Confed wrap-up video here.
Fast-Track Cities London convened partners to mark Pride month – taking part in a range of activities and joining up with colleagues at Positively UK for the London Pride Parade, marching in support of LGBTQI+ communities within London and beyond living with HIV.

Following World Hepatitis Day on 28 July, our Homeless Health team had the pleasure of welcoming Chris Streather, Regional Medical Director at NHS England London to our co-developed drop-in clinic at Health E1 Homeless Medical Centre, which offers bloodborne virus testing for HIV, Hep B & Hep C to people experiencing homelessness.
We shared more about our expertise and experience in delivering After Action Reviews (AAR) and how AAR can be used as a learning tool for patient safety and continuous improvement.
August
The Personalised Care team launched two videos from the Patient Voices for Social Prescribing Programme, showcasing powerful first-hand patient stories which can help to influence decision-making and shape how services are delivered in the future.
Social prescribing has a huge impact on patients’ lives, by providing access to support for wider issues or concerns impacting their health and wellbeing, that aren’t available through traditional healthcare.
Patients are rarely given the opportunity to tell their stories about this impact.
September
We were proud to once again support the #AskAboutAsthma awareness campaign with NHS England – London, this year celebrating it’s 7th anniversary helping to highlight children and young people’s asthma care. Catch up on the 2024 campaign week here.
Our Personalised Care team published findings from an independent evaluation on their Community Chest programme. The evaluation commended the model for strengthening connections between agencies and its impact on local collaboration and community well-being.

A survey and recommendations of NHS Talking Therapies services, undertaken by TPHC on behalf of Sport England, has been referenced in a newly published evaluation report by the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health.
On World Suicide Prevention Day, Thrive LDN joined regional partners to mark the fifth year of the Mayor of London’s citywide #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign. In this time nearly 415,000 suicide prevention training sessions have been completed by those living or working in London. Over the past 12 months, 1 in 4 training sessions globally were being completed in London, which goes to show the strength of response in the capital, and highlights the ‘spirit of Londoners to look out for other Londoners’.
November
We celebrated 7 years of Good Thinking on 1 November. Since going live in 2017, Good Thinking has supported over 800,000 Londoners to manage their mental health and wellbeing through the use of digital technologies – whether it’s anxiety, stress, low mood, sleep problems, bereavement or other common mental health concerns.
