Thrive LDN

We are supporting Thrive LDN, a participation-driven partnership that engages with, and responds to, the needs and insights of Londoners to improve mental health and wellbeing across London.

Two million Londoners experience some form of poor mental health every year and Londoners’ life satisfaction and feelings of self-worth are lower than the national average.

Thrive LDN is a coalition of partners and was established in response to this, working towards the shared mission of ensuring everyone living or working in London has an equal opportunity for good mental health.

Filmed across three days in central London, Connections invited people young and old to write a message of hope for someone who may be finding things difficult.

About Thrive LDN

When people aren’t given the chance to fulfil their potential and they don’t receive the right support at the right time, their health suffers and they struggle to thrive.

When this happens, London loses out.

Thrive LDN was launched in July 2017 by the Mayor of London and London Health Board partners as a citywide public mental health partnership to ensure all Londoners have an equal opportunity to good mental health and wellbeing regardless of who they are and where they live. As a partnership, Thrive LDN brings together organisations from across sectors, creating an infrastructure for prevention, where public mental health is a collective responsibility and a common goal.

In 2017, things began with a series of open discussions with Londoners – to encourage everyone to think, talk and act more when it comes to mental wellbeing.

On 4 July 2024, Thrive LDN marked its seventh anniversary, and there has been real progress demonstrating that we can achieve great things when we work together. In March 2024, Thrive LDN published a report which looked back upon the partnership working that has taken place during this time to support Londoners’ mental health and wellbeing.

During this time, we have been very grateful and overwhelmed by the response, willingness and involvement of Londoners to create positive change in their communities. Although this has not come as a surprise, as we know that London is a place full of individuals coming together to look out for each other and build strength and resilience.

Thrive LDN’s role continues to evolve and adapt depending on the needs of Londoners and the system. The most recent Impact Report for 2023/24 tells the story of how Thrive LDN has continued to make progress as a citywide public mental health partnership to ensure all Londoners have an equal opportunity for good mental health and wellbeing.

Thrive LDN is supported by the Mayor of London and led by the London Health Board, in partnership with Greater London Authority, Transformation Partners in Health and Care (TPHC), NHS England (London Region), Public Health England (London Region) and London Councils. Thrive LDN is part of Transformation Partners in Health and Care’s (TPHC) ‘partnerships’ portfolio.

“The Mayor and I are proud that, as a result of investment from City Hall, Thrive LDN has been able to work with communities to help tackle the mental health challenges faced by Londoners.

“Sadly, far too many people across the capital experience difficulties with their mental health, but this impact report shows what can be achieved when we work in partnership. Sadiq is committed to building a fairer, healthier city for all and Thrive LDN’s forward thinking approach is vital in addressing mental health inequalities.” – The Mayor of London’s Health Advisor, Dr Tom Coffey.

Thrive LDN’s impact

As a partnership, Thrive LDN brings together organisations from across sectors, creating an infrastructure for prevention, where public mental health is a collective responsibility and a common goal. You can explore all of Thrive LDN’s Impact Reports on their website.

During recent years there has been significant change, both positive and challenging, for London and the world. For Thrive LDN’s Impact Report for 2023-24, the team has additionally gathered some of the key stories of people, processes, partnerships, and their impact across four key areas:

  1. Distributed leadership: We empower a network of partners to share decision-making and ownership of mental health outcomes across London.
  2. Community building and sustainability: We continue to celebrate and protect diversity in London, especially for those at higher risk of unfair treatment based on their identity, beliefs, or social class, and in some cases a combination of these.
  3. Equity, diversity, and inclusion: How we have prioritised equity in our work, working towards a city whereby all Londoners, regardless of background, have equal access to mental health support.
  4. Collaboration and co-creation: How the partnership plays a vital role in coordinating efforts as part the Mayor’s Mental Health Recovery Mission for the 2023/24.

#ZeroSuicideLDN

The ZeroSuicideLDN campaign has now supported more than 415,000 people across the capital to access free, online suicide prevention training.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, on World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) 2019 launched the citywide #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign which is facilitated by Thrive LDN. Five years on, the campaign has now supported more than 415,000 people across the capital to access free, online suicide prevention training.

Developed by the Zero Suicide Alliance, the free, online training is designed to show how to have a direct and honest conversation about suicide and mental health with friends and family. The training also helps to break the stigma of talking about mental health, suicidal thoughts and bereavement.

Through the #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign, during the last twelve months, on average 1 in 4 (25 per cent) of the total number of globally completed training sessions are being completed in London each month.

The capital’s consistently high participation demonstrates the spirit of Londoners to play their part in looking out for other Londoners. As well as showcasing the collective effort from across London health and care partners, blue light and public sector agencies, charities, London’s business community, and many others to support the citywide campaign.

“One life lost to suicide is one too many and we can all play a role in preventing such tragedies by helping one another and talking more about mental health. It’s been five years since I launched the #ZeroSuicideLDN campaign, which offers online suicide prevention training. I’m proud to be one of more than over 400,000 people living or working in London who have completed the training and it’s important that we encourage even more people to take part, so we can continue to build a better London for everyone.” – The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan
