(Post inpatient detoxification /stabilisation) Intermediate Rehabilitation Beds
Provided by Mildmay Hospital. The Mildmay Hospital
Intermediate rehabilitation support can be provided for people who are sleeping rough/ at risk of sleeping rough:
- if a Local Authority is unable to access a suitable residential rehabilitation facility at the time of referral to an in-patient detoxification/stabilisation unit.
- for those requiring ongoing assessment and care post in-patient detoxification or stabilisation i.e. additional support to manage co-existing physical and mental health needs/ongoing social care assessment.
How to refer
Referrals for the Intermediate Rehabilitation beds are made by the Lead Contact within each Local Authority substance use service. Copy in: admissions.mildmay@nhs.net to your In-Patient Detoxification / Stabilisation referral.
The Mildmay Hospital Admissions Officer (Direct telephone line: 020 7613 6347) will liaise with the Lead Contact and Provider of the In-Patient Detoxification / Stabilisation unit to facilitate a timely and seamless transfer of care.
Costs
Intermediate Rehabilitation beds are funded through a combination of government grant a Local Authority budget.
Local Authorities contribute £1,001 a week to the cost of the admission with a minimum charge of 3 days.
Regional Homeless Engagement Substances Team (RhEST)
Provided by Phoenix Futures.
RhEST works across London and alongside local community teams (including substance use teams) to support people who sleep rough, or at risk of sleeping rough, to engage or re-engage with community substance use treatment:
- Assertively engage with individuals through outreach and in-reach.
- Assess barriers to drug and alcohol treatment for everyone.
- Deliver focused, time-limited interventions that improve access to services.
- Collaborate with a range of agencies to improve outcomes.

No Recourse to Public Funds
Any person classed as a non-UK national that is eligible for free secondary care services can be referred to Intermediate Rehabilitation beds through the pathway. Unclear entitlement of a non-UK national to access free secondary care must not be a barrier to consider a referral.
