Transformation Partners in Health and Care > News and views > Road to recovery: scaling up to deliver NHS priorities
Sue Hunter, Managing Director of Transformation Partners in Health and Care

This is a pivotal time for the NHS. On top of continuing to deliver the best care possible for a growing, ageing population, the system must respond to meet strategic priorities:

  • addressing the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care’s three big shifts: from hospital to community, analogue to digital, treatment to prevention
  • meeting the Road to Recovery challenge for value for money and productivity (and more scalable solutions over pilots, pilots and more pilots), and,
  • responding to NHS England’s recently issued planning guidance, focusing on improving access to primary care and urgent and emergency care, cutting waiting times, and boosting productivity.

Why we need to turn off pilot mode

At the heart of these priorities is a clear recognition of the need to build stronger, more resilient services. But as many NHS leaders know, simply ‘piloting’ solutions and testing small-scale projects is no longer enough to meet the challenge. The NHS needs scalable, long-term solutions that can deliver results now.

By working with experienced teams with in-depth system knowledge who can implement a bold vision, the NHS can do this for itself. TPHC stands ready as proud NHS workers who can help our health and care systems rise to meet this challenge by sharing and scaling up tested solutions.

A line drawn winding road and text reads: What we need from NHS road to recovery solutions - scalable, long-term, delivers now.

Acute to community

We know the shift from acute to community is not easy. However, the right vision, clinical leadership and change management expertise can bridge the gap. One example which is scalable is how we have supported an ICB to address their spirometry backlog and deliver a robust service for routine diagnostics demands. Enabling earlier patient diagnosis and access to primary care led management plans is helping to reduce disease progression.

Analogue to digital

We are supporting strategic adoption of the Federated Data Platform, demand and capacity modelling to enable more appointments, optimise the utilisation of operating theatres, increase productivity and reduce waste, improve digital access to primary and social care, and lead the automation of tasks and process. This frees up people to do less repetitive work and reduces the risk of human error. Our skilled workforce is ready to support and scale the shift away from analogue.

We have fine-tuned our approach to digital adoption through our work in primary care and adults social care in North Central London and North West London , transferring best practice from one ICB to serve another, and worked cross systems to agree priorities and secure funding.

Sickness to prevention

There are a wealth of prevention programmes that seek to ensure people stay out of hospital, and our experience and learning across London can be scaled up and shared in with other parts of the system.  From supporting homeless and inclusion health cohorts to get the help and support they need to prevention and testing for HIV and Hep C, as well as community-led initiatives for social prescribing.

Developing products such as the CapitalMidwife Anti-Racism Framework and Fellowship that support workforce retention, improve patient outcomes and address inequalities for both staff and service users, can also be readily scaled and adopted to support CORE20PLUS5

The road ahead

As the NHS embarks on its Road to Recovery, there’s a strong need for those who not only understand the intricacies of the NHS but also bring scalable, cost-effective solutions to the table. With our commitment to NHS values and our proven ability to deliver value for money, TPHC is well-equipped to support the NHS in tackling its most pressing challenges.

The road ahead may be challenging, but with the right help and a focus on sustainable, scalable solutions, the NHS can thrive once more.
