Organisational and partnership development

Introduction

Health and care organisations face constant change, from financial constraints to leadership and cultural shifts. Integrated care systems require staff to collaborate across multiple partnerships, such as neighbourhood teams or provider collaboratives.

Organisational development (OD) uses a systematic, people-focused approach to improve performance by considering culture, values, relationships, and capabilities. It helps organisations adapt to change, ensuring effective teamwork and sustained success.

OD is essential for maintaining organisational performance, achieving organisational goals and enhancing employee and stakeholder experiences in rapidly changing environments.

Partnership development is a critical success factor when individual organisations come together with other organisations and work collaboratively as part of neighbourhoods, place-based-partnerships and integrated care systems.

Our offer

TPHC has the organisational development (OD) expertise and experience to support organisations to:

  • manage the cultural and psychological aspects of change during significant shifts in organisational strategy or context
  • build greater bottom-up engagement between staff and the values of the organisation
  • identify and address cultural barriers
  • make the most of everyone’s strengths to achieve strategic goals
  • work within cross-organisational partnerships, establishing effective delivery mechanisms and governance, and considering ways of working and effective relationship building.

Team development

Our experienced OD consultants can help clients to:

  • understand change
  • develop strategies to address cultural and behavioural issues using a range of different approaches, using established methodologies such as either diagnostic OD or dialogic OD.
  • draw on a range of industry recognised tools to deal with the behavioural aspects of change.

We can support either individual teams and organisations or teams that work across organisational boundaries, considering the complexities of system working, partnership and integration.

Board development

Our approach to board development is underpinned by our experience of the different drivers for different types of organisation across the health and care sector. Many challenges for boards stem from questions of clarity over roles, governance and accountability. TPHC supports boards to operate more effectively through self-reflection, building trust, clarifying roles and helping them consider the best ways to influence their organisation and hold leaders to account.

Systems and partnership development

TPHC is expert in supporting leaders and partners to enhance the effectiveness of partnership arrangements, from integrated neighbourhood teams, place-based partnerships and integrated care partnerships to provider collaboratives.

We do this through whole-system shared visioning exercises which engage partners, surface debates, and build consensus and narrative on shared ambitions and desired benefits. We help partners develop and agree long-term outcomes and strategic objectives, bringing together the engagement, research and analysis of data necessary to build cases for change and options appraisals.

We help partners build strategies that are owned by and reflect the views of stakeholders across integrated care systems, by ensuring effective engagement and co-production with residents, communities, staff and partner organisations. With system and partnership work this often involves iterating a set of ideas with partners and encouraging debate to build consensus and identify areas of agreement and differences.

Governance review and development

TPHC consultants are experts at helping clients optimise their internal and system-wide governance arrangements. This enables delivery of strategic organisational objectives through high levels of trust across people and partnerships and ensures clarity of accountability and effective decision making across the organisation.

Clinical leadership development

Developing clinical leadership competence and confidence takes time and investment. TPHC understands the value of early identification and talent management of emerging organisational and system-wide clinical leadership and the benefits this adds to recruitment and retention of an expert clinical workforce.

We can support leaders to develop a system-wide view, encouraging new leaders to develop their system clinical leadership confidence and competence. Our strong relationships and track record of working with executive clinical leaders across the NHS, such as chief medical officers and chief nursing officers, demonstrate our credibility in this field.

We use best practice to inform our approach. For example, we use the COM-B model of behaviour change to understand the main drivers of change, enabling clinical leaders to target the most effective interventions.

Executive/leadership development

Through the compassionate leadership approach, TPHC strongly believes in the concept of leading through others – delivering through teams and helping move people through their response to change. TPHC recognises the importance of understanding and engaging with existing tools and approaches within an organisation, and how different styles and preferences can impact on likelihood of success.

Our offer supports individuals to become both system leaders and organisational leaders, through a sound understanding of organisational context within the NHS and the wider public sector.

TPHC has an emerging track record of supporting leadership teams to reflect on their approach to equality, diversity and inclusion, addressing inequalities in both the population they serve and the workforce they employ.

Workshop/event design and facilitation

TPHC’s significant expertise in workshop design and facilitation can be applied to a wide variety of situations where you need to bring people together to achieve collective results. This includes team development, requirements gathering, visioning and strategic prioritisation, new approaches to clinical networks, building consensus for transformation programmes, simulation learning events, and clinical pathway or service redesign.

We can work with small teams or large public consultations, and with different types of stakeholders such as local communities, senior clinicians and leaders or elected members. We facilitate events and exercises that mix residents and service users with practitioners and seek to benefit from the rich diversity of perspectives in the room. We are experienced in convening events which may include sensitive topics, conflict or power imbalances.
