TPHC is proud to announce that University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) has achieved the bronze award through the anti‑racism framework for maternity services.
This is a significant milestone that reflects the trust’s sustained commitment to creating an inclusive, equitable environment for its maternity workforce and the communities it serves.
The anti‑racism framework, co‑created by TPHC in partnership with the NHS England London Region’s CapitalMidwife team, sets out a structured, evidence‑based approach for maternity services to become actively anti‑racist.
Built on years of work supporting, empowering and elevating global majority maternity staff across London, the framework outlines nine initiatives that services should implement to embed anti‑racist practice.
These include increasing the representation of ethnic minority staff in leadership roles, addressing bias in recruitment, and strengthening ongoing professional development. The framework is supported by a suite of practical tools and resources that guide services through implementation.
Drawing on this experience and expertise, TPHC has spent the past year working closely with UHL’s maternity leadership team, led by Dalvir Kandola, providing hands‑on support, structured guidance and independent oversight as the trust progressed through the framework.
The partnership focused on building evidence, defining priorities, and embedding sustainable actions that support a fair, inclusive and psychologically safe culture.
Achieving the bronze award marks an important step in UHL’s journey, signalling its dedication to tackling inequalities and ensuring that global majority midwives and maternity staff are supported to thrive.
“We are extremely proud to have achieved this milestone. Of particular importance to us was that the process was externally moderated, ensuring a level of rigour and objectivity that strengthens the credibility of the assessment. This has provided us with a robust foundation and clear direction for the work ahead and we look forward to progressing towards the Silver award with the continued support of TPHC.”

UHL now joins a growing number of services adopting the framework, with most London trusts actively implementing or preparing to implement the approach and five already achieving bronze status.
“We are delighted to see University Hospitals of Leicester achieve the bronze award. This milestone reflects the trust’s deep commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable culture for its maternity workforce. I am immensely proud of our team at TPHC, whose expertise and collaborative approach continue to make a meaningful difference in supporting organisations on their anti‑racism journeys.”
