Helping Londoners make the most of the NHS App

Almost 5.7 million healthcare staff hours and £5.2 million in postage were saved nationally between July 2024 and March 2025 thanks to the NHS App, which helps patients book treatment that fits around their lives, rather than the other way round.

But, however good the App is, people need to know about it to be able to take advantage of it.

In 2024, Transformation Partners in Health and Care ran an awareness campaign on behalf of NHS England London to encourage more people to use the redesigned NHS App and existing users to make better use of it.

Our multidisciplinary consultancy team collaborated with London’s integrated care boards and regional communications leads to deliver a phased, multi-channel campaign to boost visibility of the App and drive user behaviour change across the city.

The campaign combined high-level regional messaging, a four week paid social media campaign in north west London, and grassroots communications tactics (door dropped leaflets and multi-lingual resources in GP practices) in the two primary care networks with the lowest uptake in north west London.

What the campaign achieved

The campaign resulted in measurable increases in NHS App engagement:

  • London region: 1.7% increase in logins, 7.7% increase in GP medical record views.
  • NWL ICB: 3.5% increase in logins, 8.3% increase in record views.
  • Targeted PCNs:
    • 6.5% increase in logins
    • 9.2% increase in medical record views.

About the NHS App

NHS App users can manage their appointments, view prescriptions, access their GP health record (going back at least as far as November 2023) and receive notifications at the touch of a button, avoiding missed appointments, reducing stress on healthcare services, and providing easier access to information and services.

The number of hospitals allowing patients to view appointment information on the NHS App reached 87% at the end of March, up from 68% in July 2024 and slightly exceeding the 85% end of year target.
