Community outreach / engagement

Tower Hamlets

Have a Band 5 Community Engagement Worker [JD is available for download here], who focuses on building relationships with local communities and raising awareness of IAPT services. The job description lists as ‘desirable’ that they speak second language commonly spoken in Tower Hamlets, as this helps to make connections with local community groups.

Prior to the creation of the Community Engagement Worker role, the PWPs within Tower Hamlets IAPT service shared out the community engagement work, which was protected time within their job plans. However, the service found it harder to respond to ad-hoc requests or attend meetings with community groups, if the meeting or request was on a day that the PWP had clinics (rather than the protected outreach time). Therefore, the service decided to fund a dedicated Community Engagement Worker and reduce the PWP workforce by one to fund it. In the long-run the Community Engagement Worker has increased awareness and profile of the service, through promoting the service in a proactive manner, and building good partnerships with community and third sector partners. The service has not had to struggle to reach its access targets.
